Istanbul

Istanbul (historically Byzantium and later Constantinople; see the other names of Istanbul) is Europe's most populous city (the world's 3rd largest city proper) and Turkey's cultural and financial center. The city covers 27 districts of the Istanbul province.[2] It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.[3]

Mersin

Mersin is een havenstad aan de zuid-oostkust van Turkije en ligt in de gelijknamige provincie Mersin. De kust waar Mersin aan ligt heet de Cylicische Kust. Met ruim 600.000 inwoners is het een echte stad met alle bijbehorende voorzieningen. Voor een plaats van deze grootte heeft mersin echter maar weinig hotels. Het aan de kust gelegen Mersin Hilton en de in het drukke centrum gelegen Taksim hotel zijn eigenlijk de enige grote hotels die de stad telt en worden vooral bezocht door zakenlui.
Het toerisme naar Mersin staat op een zeer laag pitje, ondanks de aanwezigheid van stranden, uitgaansgelegenheden en winkels. De aanwezige voorzieningen zijn echter meer op de lokale bevolking dan op toeristen gericht en de structuur van Mersin is gewoonweg (nog) niet berekend op grootschalig toerisme.
Omdat er hier relatief weinig westerse toeristen komen kun je wat meer van het echte leven zien. Urenlang rondwandelen zonder aangesproken te worden door iemand die beter wil worden van de aanwezigheid van toeristen kan hier nog, in tehenstelling tot de populaire Turkse badplaatsen waar je tot vervelens toe aangsproken wordt door verkopers, kelners, bedelaars, time-sharingverkopers en andere mensen die iets van je willen.
De economische drijfveer van de stad is de haven en de daarbij behorende free zone, waar een groot aantal magazijnen en kledingateliers zich bevinden. Samen met Istanbul is Mersin één van de belangrijkste havenplaatsen van Turkije.
De bebouwing in Mersin wordt vooral gekenmerkt door appartementengebouwen van ongeveer 3 tot 20 verdiepingen hoog. In het centrum hebben de onderste verdiepingen van deze gebouwen vrijwel altijd een commerciële functie (winkeltjes, horeca, kantoren etc.)

Reizen naar Mersin
Met het vliegtuig vlieg je naar het nabijgelegen Adana. Met Turkish Airlines vlieg je in ruim 3 uur naar Istanbul en aansluitend kun je met een binnenlandse vlucht van 1 uur en 15 minuten naar Adana (airport code ADA) vliegen. Vanaf Adana rijdt je in ruim een uur per taxi naar Mersin.

Reizen in Mersin
De beste manier om je te verplaatsen in Mersin is per taxi. De afstanden in het centrum zijn ook nog lopend te doen waarbij het beste de boulevard als oriëntatiepunt aangehouden kan worden.
